If you want to move your domain from one registrar to another (for example, when switching hosting providers), here's what generally needs to happen:
- Make sure the domain is unlocked at your current registrar (domains are often locked by default to prevent unauthorised transfers).
- Request the authorisation/EPP code (sometimes called a transfer code) from your current registrar - this proves you're the legitimate owner.
- Confirm the domain isn't within the first 60 days of registration, and isn't already expired (expired domains usually need to be renewed before they can move).
- Give the authorisation code to your new provider and approve the transfer request when it comes through, usually via email.
A transfer typically takes a few days to complete. Your website and email can usually keep working throughout the process as long as you don't change your DNS/nameservers at the same time - it's best to do one change at a time.
