If you want to move your domain from one registrar to another (for example, when switching hosting providers), here's what generally needs to happen:

  1. Make sure the domain is unlocked at your current registrar (domains are often locked by default to prevent unauthorised transfers).
  2. Request the authorisation/EPP code (sometimes called a transfer code) from your current registrar - this proves you're the legitimate owner.
  3. Confirm the domain isn't within the first 60 days of registration, and isn't already expired (expired domains usually need to be renewed before they can move).
  4. Give the authorisation code to your new provider and approve the transfer request when it comes through, usually via email.

A transfer typically takes a few days to complete. Your website and email can usually keep working throughout the process as long as you don't change your DNS/nameservers at the same time - it's best to do one change at a time.
